racial harmony day was a total fiasco.it was the ultimate oh-my-god-what-the-hell situation.it makes the idea of racial harmony totally meaningless.
first, the school did not allow us to come in other races ethnic costumes other than Chinese Malay or Indian costumes.ok.here's the weird part.we are suppose to promote racial cohesion between all the races in Singapore so as to be able to cooperate, understand and tolerate each other's race and religion in our multi-cultural country.yes i agree that Singapore once comprises of these three main ethnic groups and the past race riots mainly involved these three races.but Singapore is getting globalised and the are alot more other Singaporeans that hail from other countries be it the PRs or the scholars.is the sch still that narrow-minded and naive to think that our country only wants to promote racial Harmony between the Chinese Malays and Indians. one teacher even said so many times that this is not international friendship day but racial Harmony.is that teacher trying to imply that we should only be friends with our foreign counterparts and not promote Harmony? I'm utterly confused and disgusted by what that teacher said. then in that case what is the use of getting a mean of 1.2 from the cohort of 2007 in SS when she herself do not advocate what she teaches.
not only that the worst part is that the pupils that come from other countries to come to study here are not allowed to wear their own ethnic costumes!how absurd i tell you.the burmese girl was not allowed to wear her own traditional burmese costume and was tol straight in the face that her race is simply not recognise-not the exact words but the hidden meaning is strong.the worst point is that there were girls who rented the korean hanbok and could not wear it.what is racial harmony if we are only promoting racial harmony amongst the three races in cosmopolitan singapore which obviouly cosist of more than 3 races.just because this day is to commemerate the race riots, must we still live in the past and not look forward to prevent this from happening with the OTHER races in Singapore.
and last year this sort of thing didnt even happen.2 prefests even wore the kimono, resulting in an increase in people renting costumes this year. perhaps its the change in authority."lest old clothes sit better than new..."
the spirit and meaning of this year's racial harmony day is totally lost.and too many people were unhappy. a first sign of rioting behavior=)
this post is purely my own feelings and please do not quote me or anything.i dont want to be sued if you get what i mean.
